'm steve chenevey. >> i'm tony perkins. that rain yesterday was intense. it was coming down so hard, i'm walking around my house, checking making sure i'm not getting any leak coming through the ceiling. >> torrential in spots. let's get right to the maps. i can show you how hard the rain fell across parts of the area. these are rain totals. not putting numbers on these. the heaviest rain was just west of washington. where you see the darker yellows and reds, that is indicating close to 2 inches of rain. you can see a good portion of area got a nice, heavy dose of rain yesterday. most the area got at least something. that is a little unusual when we are forecasting scattered thunderstorms to see most of the area getting rain. we'll do aall over again today. right now, a lot of moisture. there could be fog in a few spots. later this afternoon, open up the map for you in west virginia. we have new thunderstorms developing. we will have the possible of afternoon showers and thunderstorms in your afternoon forecast. 89 in washington. 85 in front royal. >> thank you. >>> let's check some la

news continues now at 6:00. >> i'm steve chenevey. >> i'm sarah simmons. >> we have the latest now as hurricane irene takes aim at the east coast. states of emergency have been declared in virginia, maryland, delaware, north carolina, new york and new jersey. >> evacuations under way in parts of north carolina. a mandatory evacuation of ocean city started at midnight. mayor rick meehan has order everyone out with the exception of emergency personnel by 5:00 today. in delaware, an evacuation order has been issued for visitors in sussex county. that is the area of rehoboth, dewey and bethany beaches. >> irene destroyed hundreds of homes in the bahamas. tropical storm-force winds are reaching as far as 250 miles out from the eye of the storm. let's get a quick look at where the eye of the storm is now and check in with tony perkins. >> it is offer the coast of florida. that is where the storm is centered at this point. it is a category 2 hurricane, just under category 3 status. a massive storm. let's go to vipir. i had said we wouldn't but let's go to vipir just to get a big look at h

5. i'm sarah simmons. >> i'm steve chenevey. the latest on hurricane irene's impact the storm blamed for at least 40 deaths, three of those in vermont. up to 11 inches of rain fell in that state and it is now dealing with the worst flooding in nearly a century. million of people still without power. >> that includes tens of thousands right here in the dose area still waking up in the dark. here are the latest numbers for you. pepco is reporting just under 1,000 in the dark. dominion with around 4,000 in northern virginia. the biggest outages come from bge, over 159,000 customer in five local counties without power. >>> anne arundel, calvert and st. mary county schools are all closed today. better news in montgomery county where the power is back on and all schools will be open. most schools in prince george's county will be open but there are 18 schools that will be closed. a list of those scroll ago long the top of the screen. three schools that had been closed will be open today. largo high school, central high school and suitland high school. they did not think they could get thos
